factions is a stand alone game, but you can add the factions key on to your existing account and it acts as an expansion.

-GW:Factions is both an Expansion and a standalone = You choose (you can purchase it and play it as a standalone game, or you can add the factions access key to your account to have it act as an expansion)

-Prochecies is Guild Wars 1. See Prophecies as Factions' expansion if you play Factions as standalone

Buy both. Add the key from Guild Wars: Factions (to be released this week) to your existing account.

Factions isn't really an "expansion." The situation with Guild Wars: Prophecies and Guild Wars: Factions is like the whole Sonic 3 + Sonic & Knuckles fiasco. Separate games alone, but combinable into one huge mega-game.

Not at all. While factions is a stand alone there are all kinds of things worthwhile about the first installment. Underworld, Tombs, the quests and the story. Each chapter will stand alone by itself but you can also merge the two games and basically have one big game. If you already have the first installment I'd install it, merge the two and play through both.

if you are getting Factions and have GW add Factions to your existing GW game and have fun playing both.

if you already have one of them it makes no sence to toss the other when you could have both for a few mouse clicks

Not at all - if you install faction's and associate it with your current account you can start a new character who will start playing in the Cantha (Faction's) continent.

If you want to get to Cantha with Prophecies characters they will need to be Ascended and talk to NPC's in LA to get to go to Cantha.

So to get to the faction's area's you'd need:

1. Ascended characters from GW1 (Prophecies)
2. Start a new character in the Faction's campaign (they will start in Cantha).

Edit - Apparently your Prophecies character's don't need to ascended to go to Cantha from what I've read. This goes against the info that Anet told us earlier that they would have to be. However, this might be only while the pre-order key's are still active. But as of right now, your chars don't need to be ascended.
